Funky Cube Monsters makes one design decision that defines it: there is no time limit, only a limited number of steps. You can stare at the board for five minutes without penalty, and the only thing you are spending is moves.
That turns every level into a genuine puzzle rather than a test of pattern-spotting speed. Reaching the target score is the requirement for advancing, and with a fixed step budget the question becomes arithmetic: how much score does each available move actually produce, and which sequence gets you there inside the budget. Matching three of the same funky cubes scores; matching them in the right order scores considerably more.
It is the format to reach for if timed boards frustrate you. Nothing is hurrying you, and a level lost is a level you genuinely got wrong rather than one you were too slow for.

Count backwards from the target. Divide what you still need by the steps you have left, and you get the score each remaining move has to average — which turns a vague board into a clear choice between the moves in front of you.
